Where fo.rtuito.us Falls Short

I'm a big fan of social networking, and I believe it's yet to reach it's full potential online. Myspace, the biggest of them all for now, is sort of the bane of the internet in my opinion. Marketing everywhere you turn, god awful profile design that makes your eyeballs bleed, and lots and lots of pointless posts about what band you saw first, 20 questions about nothing, and whatever chain letter that's going around at the time. So naturally, when something like fo.rtuito.us came along, I was excited.

fo.rtuito.us is pretty much the polar opposite of Myspace. It runs on serendipity, see. You have a profile which consists of nothing more than your screen name and a photo, and you're partnered up with a person at random. You see only their screen name, and it's up to the two of you to get to know one another via messaging back and forth. After 5 days, you decide whether or not you want to keep them as a friend, and a new person is served up to you. The process begins again.

I think it's an interesting concept, but after having been a user for over a month now, with 0 friends I see 2 main reasons why it's not so fantastic after all:

1) The 5 day waiting period: I understand the idea behind the 5 day waiting period, but sometimes you don't want to wait. Many times the person never writes back, and you're stuck waiting and waiting until you can try someone bew.

2) Language barriers: As is the way of the internet, fo.rtuito.us enjoys a widely international audience (or so I gather from the number of people I've been connected to who live all over the world). The system should have some sort of translation tool easily accessable to members to help facilitate communication between those who don't share a common primary language.

I think the idea of serendipity in social networks is an interesting one, and I do think I'll try to use the system for another month or so and see what happens. My main beef with it as it is now is something they can definitely fix, and the site is ever-evolving, so it will be interesting to see what sort of changes they make in the following months to come.

Myspace Censorship

There's an interesting article at LRHB Industries about Myspace censoring bulletins relating to AOL's new services widely being regarded as a "Myspace Killer"… check it out!

A bit of Parkour Freewalking, anyone?

Excuse me? Whatwalking?

A friend turned me on to this crazy… um… sport, except it’s actually more aptly described as a “philosophy of movement”. What looks on the outside to be a combination of gymnastics and martial arts, the French art of Parkour aims to move you through the urban landscape as quickly, and as fluidly as possible.

Still confused? Check out this amazing example from a french movie and it’ll all make lots of sense:

More videos can be found at the ever wonderful YouTube here. Definitely an amazing art.

The Polyphonic Spree is not a cult

Ok so maybe they are a cult, but you know what? Who gives a rat’s ass! What do people have against music that makes you feel happy, makes you close your eyes and see sunshine and rainbows and bunnies and unicorns, without the pesky cost and side effects of drugs and alcohol?

I think it’s the ever-pervasive idea of the American individual, the cowboy, the lone ranger… look at Morning Musume in Japan! There’s like 30 iof them and no one thinks they’re a cult! The whole anti-communist witch hunts of the McCarthy era made everyone forget that it’s ok to be social, it’s ok to have a community… The Polyphonic Spree knows this. Are they the only ones?

Did you know that Girl Scouts aren’t allowed to be in malls in Southern CA because of laws saying that a gathering of over 5 people constitutes a “gang”? GIRL SCOUTS! Yes, they’re annoying, but their cookies! Their cookies are so delicious!

You know you live in San Francisco when…

When I first moved here, I was struck by the sheer amount of people that have iPods. Everyone on the bus and on the streets seem to have the white little earbuds poked into their ears, and I came to accept that. But after living here for a while, some very strong signs that you’re living in San Francisco are:

1) The day after Apple releases something new, you see at least 12 of them on the bus to and from school or work.

2) You’re sitting on the bus and the guy across from you is listening to his iPod nano while answering his black RAZR and the guy to your left is playing with his PSP while the guy t your right is playing a Gameboy Micro.

3) You can get a wifi connection pretty much anywhere you go, with at least 4 open connections to choose from at any given time.

4) You start to wonder if Ribbity got caught because nothing new pops up anymore.
